Economic losses from hurricanes cannot be nationally offset under unabated warming

چکیده
Abstract Tropical cyclones range among the costliest of all meteorological events worldwide and planetary scale warming provides more energy moisture to these storms. Modelling national global economic repercussions 2017’s Hurricane Harvey, we find a qualitative change in response an increasingly warmer world. While United States were able balance regional production failures by original 2017 hurricane, this option becomes less viable under future warming. In our simulations over 7000 sectors with than 1.8 million supply chain connections, US are not offset losses use efforts intensifying hurricanes unabated At certain level other countries have step necessary goods for production, which gives competitive disadvantage. highly localized mining quarrying sector—which here also comprises oil gas industry—this disadvantage emerges already Harvey intensifies Eventually, regions reach their limit what they can offset. chose example specific hurricane impacting region, mechanism is likely applicable climate-related sectors. It thus that best adapted climate gain significant advantage competitors

issues of science and politics. Because of their significant and visceral impacts, discussion of extreme events is a frequent locus of such conflation. Linda Mearns, of the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), aptly characterizes this context: “There’s a push on climatologists to say something about extremes, because they are so important. But that can be very dangerous if we really...

347 MARCH 2008 AMERICAN METEOROLOGICAL SOCIETY | T ropical cyclones account for the majority of natural catastrophic losses in the developed world and, next to floods, are the leading cause of death and injury among natural disasters affecting developing countries (UNDP/BCPR 2004). It is thus of some interest to understand how their behavior is affected by climate change, whether natural or ant...
متن کاملHurricanes in a Warming Climate
There are fundamental differences between the climate of the Southern and Northern Hemispheres. Largely, these differences are dictated by the obvious differences in the geography of the two hemispheres: the Northern Hemisphere is about 50% land, whereas about 90% of the Southern Hemisphere is ocean. This asymmetry gives a much larger seasonal cycle in the Northern Hemisphere (NH) and reduces t...

Suicides, hurricanes and economic crisis Director, Lopez Bernal et al. 1 detected a suicide rate trend, between 2005 and 2010, of a 0.3% decrease per month and, above this underlying trend, an 8% increase in Spanish suicide rates since the financial crisis using an interrupted time-series analysis. However, their model considers the economic crisis as an event that occurred suddenly in March 20...
متن کاملConsciousness cannot be separated from function.
Numerous theories of consciousness hold that there are separate neural correlates of conscious experience and cognitive function, aligning with the assumption that there are 'hard' and 'easy' problems of consciousness. Here, we argue that any neurobiological theory based on an experience/function division cannot be empirically confirmed or falsified and is thus outside the scope of science. A '...
